I read "Asthma" by Terry L. Smith. This book is part of the Genes & Disease series. It gives very informative facts about the medical condition. Asthma is a respiratory condition marked by spasms in the bronchi of the lungs, causing difficulty in breathing. It usually results from an allergic reaction or other forms of hypersensitivity. An estimated 300 people worldwide suffer from asthma, with 250,000 annual deaths attributed to the disease. It is estimated that the number of people with asthma will grow more than 100 million by the year 2025. This book covers the topics of the challenge of living with asthma, healthy lungs vs asthmatic lungs, which people suffer from it and why, living with the condition, genetic engineering, and the bright future for asthma control. After reading this book, I have learned various interesting facts about it. For example, I have learned that exposure to such things as tobacco smoke, allergens in the form of dust mites or cat dander, air pollution, or even catching a common cold, may lead to asthma if one happens to be born with asthmatic genes. The environment has a lot to do with this respiratory condition. Allergens of our environment such as the pollen from trees, grasses, hay, ragweed, mold, certain types of animals, insects (cockroaches, for example), and various types of foods (including nuts) are all triggers of asthma, as reported by asthmatic patients. Another fact I found interesting in this book was that Theodore Roosevelt was a sufferer of asthma, as stated at the beginning of the book. As a child, he would have frequent attacks. But since that took place in the mid 1800s, doctors did not have any useful treatments for him. His parents would stand helplessly at his bedside as he gasped for even a tiny breath of air. A doctor of that time period suggested that the cigar smoke treatment may help young Theodore. However, that only made their son's gasps for air become even more frantic. Little did they know that cigar smoke (or smoke of any kind) was a trigger of asthma. After reading this book, I became amazed at how far modern-day medical treatments had come. I have become more knowledgeable on this topic. If you know anyone who is currently suffering from asthma, or if you would like to become more knowledgeable on the condition yourself, I highly suggest reading this book!
